R-5 - Substituted with R-6
Retired Persons Affected By The Board Of Pensions
WHEREAS, retired pastors and other retired ELCA employee incomes have been reduced by 9% this year and will be reduced another 18% over the next two years by the Board of Pensions; and
WHEREAS, this loss of income will cause financial difficulty for most of the ELCA employees involved; and
WHEREAS, the general annuity fund, for those involved, is not a closed fund and money cannot be contributed by law; and
WHEREAS, the emergency help that has been set up by synods is not enough to help everyone; and
WHEREAS, some of those affected are under government subsidies or other funds regulated by our tax laws, and help for these individuals needs to be a coordinated effort; and
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Northern Illinois Synod authorize (an) offering(s) that would be placed into a fund distributed equally to all ELCA retired members of the Northern Illinois Synod, covered by the Board of Pensions and will be financially hurt by the proposed 27% loss of income; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, in order to implement and distribute this (these) offering(s), a committee be formed composed of two (2) members from every conference of the Northern Illinois Synod appointed by the Conference Deans. There shall also be representation from the Bishop’s staff, and someone from the Board of Pensions. These persons shall be appointed by the Bishop of the Northern Illinois Synod; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this committee develop a Memorial to Churchwide that would encompass support for all of our retired persons affected by the Board of Pensions in income.
