Global Relief - passed
WHEREAS, we recognize that, although our individual congregations have many needs during these stressful financial times, the church is called to service outside its borders; and
WHEREAS, disastrous earthquakes in Haiti and Chile remind us that the need for relief response must be immediate, as well as prolonged, in order to save lives; and
WHEREAS, malaria, AIDS, and waterborne diseases continue to kill millions of people around the world, especially children who are most vulnerable; and
WHEREAS, the recession that has occurred in the United States must be recognized as a global recession, which has led to more issues of world hunger; and
WHEREAS, 100% participation of all congregations has been and will continue to be a primary goal of the World Hunger Sub-Committee of the Northern Illinois Synod;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that every congregation of the Northern Illinois Synod be encouraged to be involved with at least one aspect of the ELCA World Hunger program; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that congregations strive to make additional financial contributions this year to ELCA Disaster Relief; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that our congregations become aware of the concerns that malaria, AIDS, and waterborne diseases have on the world's population, thereby giving consideration to a gift toward the special initiatives that the ELCA has in this regard; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that our congregations continue to join in prayer that the hungry be fed, that the suffering be consoled, and that help arrive in a timely manner to those who experience natural disasters.
