Churchwide Representative

The Rev. Dr. Sherman Gregory Hicks currently serves as the Executive Director for the Multicultural Ministries Program Unit of the ELCA in Chicago. He started this position in January, 2006.

Ordained in 1973, he has served in the ELCA as Mission Director and Coordinator of the African American/Black Outreach Strategy, Division for Outreach; Senior Pastor of First Trinity Lutheran Church in Washington, DC; Bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod; Assistant to the Bishop of the Illinois Synod, LCA; Co-pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in East Orange, NJ; and Pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church in Buffalo, NY.

He is a native New Yorker, having been born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Wyandanch, Long Island. His home congregation is Trinity Lutheran Church, Wyandanch, NY.

Rev. Dr. Sherman Hicks

Hicks is a graduate of Wittenberg University (B.A. in Political Science) and Hamma School of Theology (now Trinity Seminary, M, Div.). He has three Doctor of Divinity Degrees (Carthage College, Elmhurst College and Wittenberg University).

Currently he serves on the Board of Regents, Wartburg College; Diversity National Advisory Board, Wartburg College; South Loop Campus Ministry Board, Chicago, Illinois; National Mosaic Allied Voices, Omaha, Nebraska; Advocate Bethany Hospital Community Health Fund Board. He has served on the Board of Directors: Resource Mission Institute, Gettysburg, Pa.; Lutheran Housing Services, Fairfax, Va.; Lutheran Services in America, Baltimore, Md.: Board of Directors: Lifeline Partnership (developmentally disabled), Washington, DC; Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, Des Plaines, Il; Bethphage Mission, Omaha, Nebraska; Community Family Life Services (social service agency), Washington, DC; President, Interfaith Council for the Homeless, Chicago, Il; President, AIDS National Interfaith Network, Washington, DC; President, Council of Religious Leaders, Chicago, Il; Trustee, Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin; Adjunct Faculty, Lutheran School of Theology at Gettysburg. He is the recipient of the following awards: 1974 named by Jaycees as one of the Outstanding Young Men in America; recipient of the Alumni Citation, Wittenberg University; regularly listed in “Who’s Who in America”.

He enjoys baseball (deep down inside he is a Brooklyn Dodgers fan) and basketball; cultural events and domestic and international travel.

He currently resides in downtown Chicago and is the father of three grown children and three grandchildren.
