A Resolution on World Hunger
WHEREAS, hunger and poverty claim the lives of thousands each day
throughout God’s world, especially in the embattled continent of Africa:
WHEREAS, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America seeks to
respond faithfully to God’s call to feed the hungry and seek justice for
those in poverty;
WHEREAS, our Bishops have called upon us for an even deeper
commitment to those who are hungry and oppressed;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED; that the Northern Illinois Synod
Assembly call on each congregation in our synod to become part of the
solution by:
• Making the commitment to resolving world hunger an integral part of
the life of each congregation;
• Praying for those who suffer from hunger and those who work to help
them;
• Participating financially in the ELCA World Hunger appeal so that our
synod’s goal of 100% participation of member congregations can be
achieved.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the congregations of the Northern
Illinois Synod take up the challenge of increased giving, when possible,
by 5% annually;
• Using both traditional and creative means, members should be invited
into regular giving to the World Hunger Appeal throughout the church
year.
• Encouraging each Sunday School child within our Synod to gain
information on and participate in World Hunger projects;
• Encouraging churches to become involved in the newly formed Foods
Resource Bank program.
• And when possible, give above and beyond normal contributions towards
the Stand with Africa program to help this continent deal with the
issues of AIDS, hunger and oppression.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: that our Synod’s progress in the
World Hunger appeal be reported to the Synod assembly each year together
with ideas (available on the NIS website) that member churches have
utilized to move forward towards the aforementioned goals.
