for Victims Who Choose to Deal With the Media Media interviewsJohn R. BrooksDirector, ELCA News ServiceELCA Communication ServicesMedia Interviews over the phone If you receive a call from a reporter, always return it – even if you are not able to respond to the question Do NOT accept an immediate request for an interview by phone - Ask reporter what he/she wants to know - Ask for reporter’s deadline, and call back before deadline Before you call reporter back, write three main points you’d like to make. Reinforce throughout interview State the most important point FIRST because information you convey first is most quotedUse anecdotes or short stories to illustrate points. These are the “quotable quotes”Avoid jargon OR define jargon. Spell, too.Be friendly, be helpfulAvoid “no comment.” If you don’t know, offer to find out and call reporter laterAssume everything IS on the record. Nothing is “off the record”Ask reporter when story will appear or airGet help for crisis situations as soon as possibleWhen you call a reporter back, especially for radio, assume you will be recorded even if reporter doesn’t tell youMedia interviews – in personAssume you will be photographed – video or still photosDress appropriatelyClear your schedule, ask staff to avoid interruptionsGive reporter your business card. Ask the reporter for the sameMedia interviews – on TVSit up straightMaintain eye contact with interviewer-- NOT the camera – unless told otherwiseAvoid lots of facts and figures.
