October 23-25, 2006

Lorraine Brugh is the Kruse Organ Fellow and University Organist at Valparaiso University. She joined the Valparaiso faculty in 1998 as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Chapel Music. Dr. Brugh directs the Kantorei, teaches studio organ and musicianship classes, plans and leads campus worship services, and is leading department revision of the church music curriculum.

Dr. Brugh completed the Bachelor and Master of Music in organ performance at Northwestern University, studying organ with Karel Paukert. During her master's year, she was the organ assistant to Dr. Grigg Fountain at Northwestern's Alice Millar Chapel. Following these studies, she received a Fulbright-Hays award for a year of study in Essen, Germany. There she studied organ with Gerd Zacher and improvisation with Gisbert Schneider at the Folkwangschule für Musik-Ruhr in Essen-Werden. During this time she concertized in Germany and Holland. More recently Dr. Brugh completed a PhD in Religious Studies at Northwestern University and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in the area of contemporary Christian thought. Her dissertation treats the contextualization of music and worship in the local congregational setting.

Prior to her appointment at Valparaiso, Dr. Brugh was College Organist at Elmhurst College and Director for the Chapel at the ELCA Churchwide Offices in Chicago. She has also taught at the College of DuPage (IL), Northwestern University and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary. Dr. Brugh is currently serving on the ELCA's project, "Renewing Worship." She is on the senior editorial resource team, the Liturgical Music committee, and was a writer for the Music Consultation.

She is active in the Association for Lutheran Church Musicians, currently serving on the national worship planning committee for their 2003 biennial convention, and on the Raabe Composition Prize Committee. She is active in the American Guild of Organists, and has served as Dean of the North Shore Chapter (IL). She has also served as Principal Organist and Paul Bouman Endowed Chair in Chapel Music in Lutheran Summer Music, the national Lutheran high school music camp. In summer 2003 she will serve as the Music Director for the 2003 Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation in Winnipeg, Canada.
