* If you haven't already registered for the Synod Assembly or the Synod Youth Assembly - please do ASAP! Registration deadline was May 1. You can register online, read many of the reports, study the resolutions, read about our special guests, and find out all the pertinent information about this year's assembly at www.nisynod.org/assembly . If you're not attending this year's assembly, watch the site for photos and highlights to be posted during and after the event.

* This year, in order to be good stewards of the Synod's time and resources, certain portions of the Synod Assembly Bulletin of Reports are available online for voting members to read online and/or print out as they wish to include with their materials at the assembly. It is not necessary to print out these reports - but only to read them for your own preparation for the assembly and understanding of the ministries of the Synod. Congregations are responsible to print out reports for their voting members without internet access. Congregations are encouraged to print out these reports for all their voting members. Congregations without internet access may call Nancy Corey, Registrar, at 309-794-4004 to request hard copies to be mailed.

* Congregations are encouraged to begin collecting items to send with synod assembly voting members for the Synod Assembly in-kind offering. Download this flyer describing this year's two in-kind offerings. Copy & paste the information into your bulletins and newsletters.

Each year, the Northern Illinois Synod Social Ministry Committee is given varying levels of funding by the Synod for fulfilling the Committee’s mission: "To inspire and empower the people of the Northern Illinois Synod to Make Christ Know by expressing God’s love through compassion, justice, and service." A grant process has been established that is the Committee’s way to make a best effort at getting this funding into the hands of congregations or groups where the funds can be converted into meaningful Christian expressions of compassion, justice, and service. The grant application form and further details on the grants can be found on the Northern Illinois Synod web site at www.nisynod.org/resources . Grant application forms will also be available in the registration packet and at the Social Ministry Committee table at the 2006 Synod Assembly at Augustana College on June 16 & 17, 2006.

There are suggestions to help congregations launch groups and a "lectionary blog" for anyone to share comments and insights as they discover more about being a disciple of Jesus Christ, connect the Word of God with daily life experiences and explore ways to deepen faith practices in everyday living.

A new, free resource for congregations, the "Church Toolkit for Israeli-Palestinian Peacemaking," is now available from Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP), an ELCA-sponsored partnership. The tool kit is designed to provide resources and guidance on how to approach the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a congregational setting. Perfect for adult forums, companion synod and companion church committees, synod global mission gatherings and more, this tool kit will equip local churches and activists with resources to engage in peacemaking efforts in their communities. The tool kit is arranged into three topic areas around which activities can be planned, including awareness-building, education and engagement in advocacy. The tool kit is suitable for both augmenting current activities and for beginning new initiatives. "When the 2005 Churchwide Assembly adopted the Churchwide Strategy for Engagement in Israel and Palestine, our church committed itself to advocacy for political solutions that address the rights to security and peace with justice for both Palestinians and Israelis," said the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop, ELCA. "This resource gives our congregations a tremendous opportunity for raising awareness, educating their members, and using their voices to speak out for peace in the Holy Land." The tool kit is viewable on the Web and downloadable as a pdf file, suitable for printing. Get the tool kit now at www.cmep.org/Toolkit/Toolkit_home.htm .More information on ELCA's involvement in the Holy Land is found at www.elca.org/middleeast and www.elca.org/peacenotwalls , and interested people are invited to subscribe to e-mail updates on news and regional or national events at www.elca.org/middleeast/emailsignup.html . Continuing Education Opportunities

The Bethel Series has been a tool that has served so many congregations in the Northern Illinois Synod of the ELCA. Revitalizing our spiritual life happens when people get into the Bible and history has proven that the Bethel Series is a wonderful program to lead people into the Word. There they actually meet the true Christ of the Scriptures. Your church may own an enrollment in the Bethel Series--and it’s for a lifetime! Some congregations have laid the program aside for awhile, but this may be the right year to renew the program. Some congregations have yet to experience what can happen when their laity achieves biblical literacy. To learn more about the Bethel Series, visit their website at www.bethelseries.com --or call them at 800-462-2335. The summer training program is scheduled for July 16—25, 2006. Food and housing will be offered at the Edgewater Hotel, and the Emmaus Room is generously provided by Bethel Lutheran Church for the teaching of the classes.  Renew…Revitalize…Enter into a life of discipleship

Centered Life: Awakened, Called, Set Free, Nurtured

Book Signing and discussion with author Jack Fortin

Jack Fortin will discuss and sign his new book, Centered Life: Awakened, Called, Set Free, Nurtured.  Fortin, a well-known Rockford native, is the Executive Director of the Center for Lifelong Learning at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota and leads the seminary’s Centered LifeŽ initiative. In his book, Fortin outlines a process that readers can follow to live a centered life. According to Fortin, the answer to overcoming a life that feels fragmented, isolated and overwhelming is not about living a different life; it’s about living life differently. He invites readers to focus on what is at the center of their lives and to live out their calling. Books available for purchase at the luncheon.
