This year, in order to be good stewards of the Synod's time and resources, certain portions of the Synod Assembly Bulletin of Reports are available online for voting members to read online and/or print out as they wish to include with their materials at the assembly. It is not necessary to print out these reports - but only to read them for your own preparation for the assembly and understanding of the ministries of the Synod. Congregations are responsible to print out reports for their voting members without internet access. Congregations are encouraged to print out these reports for all their voting members. Congregations without internet access may call Nancy Corey, Registrar, at 309-794-4004 to request hard copies to be mailed. * The Diakonia program will celebrate its 2nd graduation on July 15 at 2 pm at Alpine Lutheran, Rockford and would like to invite anyone interested to attend. Bishop Gary M. Wollersheim will preach. Last year, 21 people from the Northern Illinois Synod graduated from the two-year program (16 from NI sites and 5 from a Chicago site). Diakonia is a lay education program with an emphasis on spiritual formation. Christopher Dodge, Senior Pastor of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church of Bloomington, MN, has prepared a two session DVD that will examine the errors, half-truths and outright fabrications found in the popular best-selling thriller. Speaking in plain language and drawing on knowledge from art, history and theology. Pastor Dodge helps us sort out fact from fiction, truth from untruth. All are welcome.

The Northern Illinois Synod offers thanks to God for Pastor Keith Forni and the leadership he has provided over many years as Northern Illinois Synod Latino Ministry Coordinator. May God Bless him as he continues to serve as Christ's instrument in "making disciples of all nations." (Matthew 28:19) On Saturday, May 20, the Northern Illinois Synod Council reviewed and adopted a resolution that was submitted by the Outreach Committee regarding the establishment of a Hispanic-Latino Task Force. (Since it was adopted by the Synod Council it does not need further action so it will not come to the floor of the Assembly as a resolution. There will be some opportunity for further conversation/input on the work at the Outreach Committee Forums on Friday afternoon at the Assembly.) This task force will be comprised of 50% Hispanic-Latino members. It is also understood that all voting members of synod committees or task forces are voting members of Northern Illinois Synod Congregations. If you have nominations for this committee, please contact Pr. Janet Hunt in the Rock Island office. The
NIS is currently inviting congregations to be part of a new TIME
(Together in Mission Engagement) program that will be started with a
pastor's retreat this summer, and a kick-off in August. Find out more about the program at

the specific dates. Each year, the Northern Illinois Synod Social Ministry Committee is given varying levels of funding by the Synod for fulfilling the Committee’s mission: "To inspire and empower the people of the Northern Illinois Synod to Make Christ Know by expressing God’s love through compassion, justice, and service." A grant process has been established that is the Committee’s way to make a best effort at getting this funding into the hands of congregations or groups where the funds can be converted into meaningful Christian expressions of compassion, justice, and service. The grant application form and further details on the grants can be found on the Northern Illinois Synod web site at www.nisynod.org/resources . Grant application forms will also be available in the registration packet and at the Social Ministry Committee table at the 2006 Synod Assembly at Augustana College on June 16 & 17, 2006.

attending the National Youth Gathering who
can help host the following participants in the
International Guest Program of the 2006 Youth
Gathering: 3 Hondurans (1 adult, 2 male youth),
2-10 Mexicans (adults and youth), 2 Zambians (1
adult, 1 male youth), and 1 Malaysian (1 male
youth). 78 out of the 94 international guests
have hosts*.but due to an unprecedented number
of approved visa applications, we have more
youth than hosts. If your youth group is
attending the Youth Gathering in San Antonio,

International Guest Program is always highly
successful and launches relationships that last

The Deaconess
Community of the ELCA is offering grants up to
$500,000 in 2007 to congregations or social ministry
organizations who wish to partner with the Sisters
to start new, cutting edge social ministry programs.
Such programs must be gospel-centered (proclaiming
and furthering the reign of God among us), prophetic
(a program that commits itself to risk-taking and
innovative service on the frontiers of the church's
outreach), a cooperative partnership (one that
invites participation, bridges divisions and
accompanies others in mission), inclusive (one that
affirms the individual gifts of all people) and
focused on stewardship (a program that respects
God's gifts of time, talents and resources). In
addition to grant monies, the Deaconess Community
will provide prayer support, support personnel (as
needed or desired, if available), opportunities to
tell your stories of ministry, and timely
communication and support with members of the
Community's Mission Support Committee. The timeline
for the application process is as follows: Jan. 15,
2007, Deadline to submit letter of intent to the
Deaconess Community; Feb. 1, 2007, Mission Support
Committee reviews all letters of intent and invites
full proposals from qualifying submissions; March

The Clergy Clinic introduces participants to key concepts of family systems theory, provides opportunity to explore one’s own family of origin dynamics, and includes time for presenting case studies from one’s ministry setting for coaching and consultation. The clinic also includes input from Lombard Mennonite Peace Center staff and video input by Murray Bowen, the father of family systems theory, and Edwin Friedman, who led the way in helping clergy understand the congregation as an emotional system. Youth Ministry Certification schools will be held September 11-29, 2006, on the Wartburg Seminary campus in Dubuque, Iowa.
