* The next issue of Walking Together will be Tuesday, August 22

 

*  Mark your calendars and plan to attend one of the eight Mission Gatherings which will be held across the Synod starting in September. These annual events focus on topics relevant to ministry in congregations, the Synod, and the wider church. This year, the theme of the events will be “Mission Interpretation.”  A new DVD about Synod ministries will be featured. Each congregation will receive a video. Everyone is welcome. Congregation council members, stewardship committees, evangelism committees, and rostered and lay congregational leaders are all especially encouraged to attend one of these events. * Diakonia is growing. This fall they will add a second location in Rockford for classes. Rockford classes will now meet at both St. Mark and Alpine on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30. Find out more about Diakonia.

All NIS members are invited to one of the information and training sessions for Mission Interpreters (MI) Sunday, August 27, 2006 from 2-5 pm at Shepherd of the Valley, Rockford, and Saturday, September 9, 2006 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at Faith, Rochelle. The MI program is designed as a wonderful way to communicate what ministries are happening in our synod, across the U.S. and around the world. More resources on Immigration Issues. To assist in providing for congregational discussion of immigration issues as directed by the 2006 Synod Assembly, here are some additional resource materials. The latest (August 8) issue of The Christian Century has a good article on a Mexican-American family living on both sides of the border. It also has an article on "the ethics of immigration reform" by Ralston Diffenbaugh, president of the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. Another excellent and penetrating discription of Mexican immigration is given in the book "Crossing Over: A Mexican Family on the Migrant Trail" by Ruben Martinez. ($11.00 from Amazon). The magazine and/or the book may be available at your local library. Dates and locations for the Evangelical Lutheran Worship Introduction Workshops have been announced (Oct 28-Feb 11). Pastors, organists/musicians, choir directors, worship committee folks, etc. are all encouraged to attend. Each congregation may send as many people as it would like. For the $20 registration fee, each participant will receive a copy of the ELW and a meal. NIS Professional Leaders are invited to Refreshment for the Weary Soul - a day of rest, refreshment and reflection at LOMC on December 4, 2006. There will be time for walks in the woods, journaling, spiritual breathing and conversation. Pastor Troy Hedrick will guide a discussion on ways to bring on-going refreshment to weary souls. DISASTER RESPONSE:

New Life, Bolingbrook is sending their fifth delegation of missionaries to help in the Gulf Coast. The trip is scheduled for September 23-30. The Journal of Lutheran Ethics offers a two-month series on Pope Benedict’s first encyclical letter, "Deus Caritas Est," - a significant reflection on the meaning of divine and human love. One Roman Catholic and eight Lutherans comment, focusing on different aspects of the encyclical and often reaching different conclusions.

 

As we enter into a time of increased activity in the church as committees, confirmation classes and groups gather, balance is key. ELCA Wellness would like to introduce you to A Journey to Reformation. Wellness is about choice. This journey takes one of two wellness paths: ·         Here I Step: A Journey to Reformation – a six-week walking and wellness campaign that follows the roadmap for wellness: increase physical activity, decrease caloric intake and live prayerfully. A tool kit with planning materials is available on the Journey to Reformation page at www.elcabop.org. ·         Walk to Wellness - a 28-day campaign available through Mayo Clinic in which participants log their walking progress online. Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia invites you to the 2007 Summer Collegium on Christian Education in the small church. Here I Stand:  Leading Change Through Self-Differentiation is a three-day Lombard Mennonite Peace Center event at which pastors will be trained to integrate this approach into their ongoing ministries. LMPC will offer this event on August 22-24, 2006. The Clergy Clinic introduces participants to key concepts of family systems theory, provides opportunity to explore one’s own family of origin dynamics, and includes time for presenting case studies from one’s ministry setting for coaching and consultation.  The clinic also includes input from Lombard Mennonite Peace Center staff and video input by Murray Bowen, the father of family systems theory, and Edwin Friedman, who led the way in helping clergy understand the congregation as an emotional system.  LMPC will offer this event in November, 2006, February, 2007 and April/May, 2007. Youth Ministry Certification schools will be held September 11-29, 2006, on the Wartburg Seminary campus in Dubuque, Iowa. Featured speaker will be author Kyle Ezell, founder of Get Urban America, who will speak about, and sign copies of, his book Retire Downtown: The Lifestyle Destination for Active Retirees and Empty Nesters.
According to Ezell, Ruppies - Retired Urban People - want to stay active and vibrant in their maturing years. He contends that being connected to a community filled with different people, exciting places, and opportunities for growth is the key to staying young. In this new role, the Children & Family (CF) Minister provides leadership in the educational and faith-formation ministries for children and their families, including recruiting and training volunteers for Sunday Morning Learning, Vacation Bible School and other children’s ministries. The CF Minister has additional leadership responsibility for developing and implementing a developmental-stage based family ministry program and other opportunities for learning and growth. FREE TO A GOOD HOME – These are exciting times in the life of St. Mark. New music and sound system equipment is arriving to support the new third service that starts September 10. Plans are finalized to open a huge doorway from the narthex to Fellowship Hall. As we work to prepare Fellowship Hall for new and exciting worship this fall, we must clear out the space. We have one 21-foot section of wooden pews that we will need to remove from St. Mark. We would like to place this wooden marvel in a "good home," and are looking for anyone who could use it.   • Organist - Responsibilities include playing during our traditional Sunday morning worship service and working closely with the other music staff to coordinate a rich, spiritual, fulfilling experience for our parishioners. 1984 I/8 Casavant tracker with divided manual. BA in organ or church music preferred.

  • Pianist - Responsibilities include playing various instruments and help plan our non-traditional Sunday morning worship service. The pianist will work closely with other music staff to coordinate the musical aspect of this service. Candidate should have experience in a variety of music from traditional to contemporary, and possess excellent keyboard skills. Yamaha grand piano.

  • Handbell Choir Director - Responsibilities include leading weekly rehearsals and directing the handbell choir during Sunday morning worship services. The Handbell Choir Director will work closely with other music staff to coordinate and select appropriate music throughout the year to enrich our services. Past experience directing handbell choirs preferred. Three plus octaves Schulmerich handbells.

  • Children’s Music Director - Responsibilities include organizing a children’s choir and leading them at regular rehearsals and during Sunday morning worship services. The children’s music director will work closely with other music staff to help seek out and plan children’s music appropriate to both worship and music education. BA in music education or church music preferred.
