break efforts of college students along the Gulf Coast.
In March, nearly 1,100 college students from 54 different
schools participated in the first-ever Lutheran Disaster
Response "What a Relief!" spring break. The students lived
and worked for a week in locations all along the Gulf Coast
as part of the long-term recovery from the 2005 hurricane

* The expansion of the Universe
seems to be building speed, rather than yielding to gravity
and other forces. Dr. Jean Quashnock, chair of the Physics
Department at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wis., will present
the basics of modern cosmology, look at evidence gathered in
recent years from distant supernovae showing that the cosmic
expansion is in fact accelerating, and offer some of the
favored explanations for the phenomenon, namely the
cosmological constant and "dark energy." The First
Tuesday brown bag presentation in September, hosted by
the ELCA Interunit Staff Team on Faith, Science and
Technology, is actually on the month's second Tuesday.

* Recently both LSSI and LutheranAdvocacy.org have joined the Health Care Justice Faith Caucus, an initiative of the Campaign for Better Health Care (CBHC). The campaign is a statewide effort to highlight the unjust disparity in access to health care in Illinois and to work toward universal access to affordable, quality health care. They encourage congregations to hold a Health Care Sabbath during the week-end of September 15th-17th, 2006. The hope is that congregations will take this opportunity to initiate open dialogue and moral deliberation regarding the increasing health care crisis. The campaign has developed a toolkit with background information on the healthcare crisis as well as tips on how to host an event. This link contains information on how to order the tool-kit.

Stewardshops are
skill-based workshops for stewardship leaders in
congregations. A series of 10 hour-long programs are
available for download, each designed to introduce and
implement basic practices within the congregation. Each
workshop addresses a specific stewardship skill from
thanking people to asking for contributions to fostering
accountability. These events would be excellent for new
stewardship leaders in congregations or clusters of
congregations.
