Apply now for next year's Annual Accessibility Award
The ELCA's accessibility award is given every year by ELCA Disability Ministries, part of the Vocation and Education Program Unit. Deadline for applications is October 20. The winner of the 2005 Accessibility Award is First Lutheran Church of Topeka, Kan. Also available, the ELCA Accessibility Guide to help plan gatherings that are welcoming and accessible to all people with disabilities and those who are deaf.
The Journey to Reformation has begun. Registration is now available for Walk to Wellness. Walk to Wellness is a 28-day walking campaign (October 1 – 28) designed to support balance as you seek to live well in Christ. This campaign lets you choose your goal level and then get walking with motivational information, an online tracking tool and strategies and tips for success. The Zygon Center for Religion and Science will offer a public lecture on September 28 presenting cutting-edge research on what the evolutionary origins of religion might be. In “Beyond Genes and Memes: Evolutionary Science and the Origins of Religion,” Barbara King, Professor of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary, will discuss evolution’s impact on human beings’ sense of the sacred. King’s lecture will be held at 7:00 pm in the Augustana Chapel at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, 1100 East 55th St. The lecture is open to the public, with a recommended donation of $5.00. Lutheran Social Services of Illinois will host a series of seminars throughout the state for church leaders-professional and lay people-who are interested in strengthening their local or regional social ministry efforts. Called to Serve events in and near the Northern Illinois Synod will be held at Zion, Rockford on October 14th, Zion, Tinley Park on November 4, Trinity, Des Plaines on January 27, and St. John, Rock Island on March 17.
