ELCA News & Events

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson has completed his 2006 Christmas message. The text is available here. Congregations are encouraged to reproduce the message in their newsletters.

On December 4, the task force for the ELCA Studies on Sexuality will release "Free in Christ to Serve the Neighbor: Lutherans Talk about Human Sexuality," a study that invites participants throughout this church into a discussion of human sexuality. The study is grounded in the New Testament book of Galatians and Martin Luther's essay, "On the Freedom of a Christian." Read a message about it from ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson.

Stewardship by the numbers - Did you know there are 10 basic principles that provide a foundation for the life of a faithful steward, and 20 practices for growing stewards in your congregation and that stewardship is a concern for all 12 months of the year? New resources explain those numbers, but the old favorite "Annual Meeting Report Cover," which contains devotions and explanations of how stewardship is used to good effect throughout the ELCA, is still a favorite.

Stories of ELCA ministries - Pericope Partners, vignettes about ministries of the ELCA, tell about the things we do together as a whole church. These brief thematic illustrations of mission and ministry are suggested by themes from the Bible readings used in ELCA congregations each Sunday, intended for use in bulletins and newsletters. The stories for Advent and Christmas are now available online in HTML or PDF format.

Continuing Education Opportunities

The use of personal mugs rather than foam cups at meetings, the nature of the food and its preparation for communal meals, the practice of recycling bulletins at services, the choice of cleaning materials for church clean-up days, and plans for building projects all say a lot about Christian attitudes toward God's creation. So can worship and Christian education. The Rev. David M. Rhoads presents "The Greening of Congregations" Tuesday, December 5, Noon-1:00 p.m. Lutheran Center, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago. Directions: http://www.elca.org/localmap.html Dr. Rhoads, professor of New Testament, directs the environmental ministry emphasis at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). He advises the Green Zone group, supervises the Web of Creation -- http://www.webofcreation.org -- and directs the Green Congregation Program. He has planned eco-conferences and edited guidebooks for parishes. The ELCA Interunit Staff Team on Faith, Science and Technology hosts this First Tuesday brown bag presentation.
