Pastor Janet Hunt, Assistant to the Bishop for the Northern Illinois Synod, has received and accepted a call to be Senior Pastor of Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore. Pastor Hunt has served faithfully and well on synod staff since 1998. We will greatly miss her excellent and dedicated work. We rejoice, however, in her continued service among us in the Northern Illinois Synod. Read more HERE>>

Our colleague Sandy Musch, Assistant to the Bishop, will begin a three month sabbatical on January 15, 2007. This is a benefit granted by the Synod to full time professional Synod Staff members after six years of service. Sandy has been on synod staff for 20 years, so the sabbatical is long over due. We are all excited and grateful for this much deserved opportunity for Sandy. Read more HERE>>

ELCA News & Events

How Do You Do Souper Bowl? Each congregation will do its own "thing" on February 4 this year; in many, youth collect money or canned goods in large soup pots after worship. What is collected supports local and/or global anti-hunger efforts chosen by the congregation, which reports the total to the national Souper Bowl office. Last year ELCA Lutherans gave $572,419 to hunger causes on Souper Bowl Sunday. Order a poster now and read about how much fun you can have, feeding the hungry around the corner and around the world.

Economic Ethics in Everyday Life In the January issue of Journal of Lutheran Ethics, articles include essays dealing with the biblical underpinnings of stewardship, the virtue of sharing, what we don’t eat as a witness to our economic values, the virtue of frugality in relation to concerns for the environment and our culture of consumption, and an account of the "Forum for Ethics in the Workplace" as a model for discussion of practical ethical issues in the workplace.

Souper Bowl of Caring, the youth-led, grassroots, ecumenical movement to combat hunger will be held again this year during the Sunday of the NFL Super Bowl game, February 4. There's a great homepage feature on www.elca.org on the Super Bowl this week, and if you miss that, go to the bottom of the homepage and click on the cool "Souper Bowl" button. Both link to the Souper Bowl information page that Aaron Cooper set up on www.elca.org/hunger . Encourage the youth groups in your life to participate. It's as easy as collecting $1 or one can of food from folks as they leave church on Sunday, February 4. Participating means registering your intention to do a Souper Bowl collection and reporting your totals to Souper Bowl of Caring (www.souperbowl.org). Each group decides where their collections go, and ELCA World Hunger is grateful that many of the groups include a contribution to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. If you know of an ELCA youth group planning a creative or "advanced" (beyond a dollar/can good collection) Souper Bowl effort, please send let Sue Edison-Swift,  Communication director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal, know about it at hunger@elca.org  Photos, with the permissions to use them, are always appreciated!

Revised Titles, Texts, Topics for Grace Matters, February 2007
February 4  - The Undivided Life - Author, Parker Palmer - Luke 3:21-22 -    Are you living your own life or the fragments of someone else's life? At times we follow the temptation to try and assume a different character than the one God most wants us to be. But digging beneath all external appearances, there is a hidden wholeness in each of our lives, planted there by God. Author, speaker, and popular retreat leader Parker Palmer has spent his life tracking the fingerprints of God on the human soul and retrieving the hidden wholeness we all are after.

February 11  - Singing As a Way of Life - Teacher & Musician, Mary Oyer - Psalm 13:6 -    Some people run out of creativity in their'80s as their bodies naturally wear down and their spirits fight to keep up. But not Mary Oyer. This retired professor of music and song leader in the Mennonite Church has a passion for music from around the world, just as she has an undying love for teaching. Put it all together and she will tell you what it adds up to: A very fulfilling life.

February 18  - Facing the Big Questions in Life - ABC News Medical Editor, Dr. Tim Johnson - Corinthians 13:2   -   Dr. Timothy Johnson, longtime medical editor for ABC news, is not afraid to ask the big questions of religion and science. As both minister and physician, he is intrigued by the interplay of two worlds that many people find hopelessly at odds. He brings his incisive mind and spiritual vitality to a conversation about the "how's" of science and the "whys" of faith.

February 25  - Break Out the Angel Food Cake - Authors, Anthony Chiffolo and Rayner "Rusty" Hesse - Genesis 18: 1-8 -  People may joke frequently about church potluck suppers. But in one congregation, a few shared meals became the testing ground for an entire cookbook of recipes from the Bible. Anthony Chiffolo and Rayner "Rusty" Hesse put their biblical research and culinary wizardry to work for creating this imaginative resource. They join the program to help uncover the significance of hospitality in ancient times and its place around our tables today. Great food for thought!
