Plans are underway for the 2007 adult retreats at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center. There are two inspirational sessions planned in late April and late September. The Spring Retreat is scheduled for April 29-May 1, 2007. “Whose are you?” Spend three days in the beauty of spring at LOMC. The program will be led by Reverend Frank E. Lay. This retreat will look at the things we own and those things that own us— and Pastor says ‘maybe some spiritual practices thrown in.’ Some of you may remember Pastor Lay from St. Paul in Oregon. He is now retired, but he has also served congregations in Altona, IL. and Fort Morgan, CO. His interests are climbing, hiking, camping, writing and wood carving. The Fall Retreat is September 30-October 2, 2007. Pastor Carol Soderholm will lead this session, as you look at spirituality for the older adult based on the book of Ruth. It is a story of love, loyalty and redemption. The retreat will discuss how spirituality of older adults can offer wisdom and hope to our own culture. On July 19, 2007 Pastor Carol will have been a pastor in the ELCA for 20 years. For the last five years, since retirement, she has served many congregations in the Northern Illinois Synod as Interim Pastor, most recently serving Grace Lutheran Church in Woodstock, IL. She also holds international certification in Spiritual Direction. Retreat fee is $108 based on double occupancy. Call Carol at 815-732-2220 for more information or visit the website at www.lomc.org .

ELCA News & Events

Dr. Senior

Dr. Hagner

Living Together in the 21st Century In the second of three years of "Living Together" topics, evangelical and Roman Catholic theologians will address "The State of the Bible in North America" in this year's Hein-Fry lecture series on ELCA seminary campuses beginning this month. At each seminary Dr. Hagner and Dr. Senior will deliver lectures presenting their points of view about "the state of the Bible," followed by a response from a Lutheran theologian elected by that seminary.

Imagine funding your ministry far into the future! A mission endowment fund can enhance the ministry and outreach of your congregation by introducing members to "asset stewardship" and encouraging their growth in whole-life giving. The ELCA Foundation can help you establish such a fund. Check out the many resources available, including a 36 page booklet on creating an endowment, ideas to encourage gifts, and even free seminars by the staff of regional gift planners.

February 15 is the deadline for application for a Women of the ELCA grant or scholarship. Grant applications must meet the criteria that support Women of the ELCA's health initiative: Raising Up Healthy Women and Girls.Scholarships program

Opportunity scholarships are available to support ELCA laywomen who have had a break in their education and are now returning to school. A scholarship is also available for those seeking to enter the Word and Sacrament ministry of the ELCA. Learn more.

If your congregation participated in the 2007 Souper Bowl of Caring Please send an email to Melissa Ramirez Cooper,
Associate Director, ELCA News Service, melissa.ramirezcooper@elca.org (or call 773-380-2956) with the name of the congregation (include city and state), how much money and/or food products collected and name of the organization/charity receiving the funds and/or food donation. She'd also like to hear about how the funds were collected -- was it a youth-led effort? Were their skits and/or other fun activity to highlight the Souper Bowl of Caring effort in the church? If possible, please send your email no later than Feb. 7.

Download a bulletin insert for "Celebrating Rural Life" June 13-16,2007, Gustavus Adolphus College St. Peter, Minn. Co-hosted by Southwestern and Southeastern Minnesota Synods and the ELCA Rural Ministry Office This annual gathering features keynote speakers - Rev. Peter Marty, host of "Grace Matters" and Rev. Ruben Duran, ELCA Director for New Congregations and Tex Sample, retired Professor of Church and Society at St. Paul School of Theology in Missouri.

Grace Matters March 2007 Text, Titles and Topics

March 4, 2007  Knute Ogren - Take a Breath Mark 6:37 It has been said before that, “If I am hungry, this is a physical problem.  But if my neighbor is hungry, that is a spiritual problem.”  The spiritual problem of people who live with insufficient food, or who are food insecure, has reached staggering proportions.  Knute Ogren is a young church worker and musician who decided to record a couple of CDs and donate all of the proceeds to fight global hunger.  Like so many others, his contribution is (on its way to) making a significant impact.

March 11, 2007  Elizabeth Hausler - Earthquake Resistant Housing Zephaniah 3:20 The Bible does not say much about building houses, but it has many things to say about what makes for a home.  Elizabeth Hausler is well qualified to speak about building houses.  She is the founder and director of Build Change, an organization devoted to building earthquake-resistant homes, but she is also well attuned to the requirements for making a home, working hand in hand with the people of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, on their dreams for new life.

March 18, 2007  Bill Davis - More Than a Bandage For the Poor Galatians 2:10 Mother Teresa is credited with saying, “It is a very great poverty to decide that children must die so that we might live as we wish.”  Bill Davis has taken the striking power of this statement, posted it on his office wall, and decided it is the perfect inspiration to stop letting poor kids go without health care.  He left his surgical practice almost 20 years ago to serve low-income people, and has never looked back.  It’s a compelling story of faith ordering one’s deepest commitments.

March 25, 2007 Murray Finck - Stretching Heart, Soul, and Mind  Matthew 22:37-40  The fitness craze that is sweeping the country offers more benefit than just simply lowering weight, feeling energetic, and reducing the risk of diseases like diabetes and coronary blockage.  As far as Murray Finck is concerned, a discipline of fitness can bring great spiritual blessing as well.  This Evangelical Lutheran Church in America bishop cares about stretching the mind, body and spirit in ways that give serious attention to prayer.
