Where is God calling you? Consider answering a call to volunteer on a mission trip June 2-9, 2007 to Camp Victor, a ministry of Lutheran Social Services Disaster Response and Lutheran Disaster Response, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Several NIS churches are already making plans to volunteer their time on this Mission Trip. All churches are invited and encouraged to go! There is a critical need for skilled workers (such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters) and medical professionals, but unskilled laborers who are willing to learn are greatly needed also. Anyone over the age of 16 is invited to participate in this mission trip. The cost will be minimal. Housing and food are provided by Camp Victor in Ocean Springs. Your initial commitment to participate is needed by April 18th. However, you may still sign up after this date. Financial and prayerful support is requested from all congregations. Contact Debbie Weflen, St. John’s, Sterling - 815-625-2634 email: dweflen@stjohnsonthird.org with questions or to indicate your interest as soon as possible.

Online Registration is now available for the 20th Annual Northern Illinois Synod Assembly to be held June 15-16, 2007 at Augustana College, Rock Island, IL.

The Northern Illinois Synod and its partner synod, Lower Susquehanna Synod, have teamed together to create a series of Lenten devotionals for you. Please visit www.nisynod.org/lent2007 every day this Lenten season. It is our prayer that these devotions will strengthen your faith on your Lenten journey.

Check out the beautifully re-designed e-card site at www.elca.org/ecards  And, while you're there, take the opportunity to e-mail someone you love an Easter e-card. Go directly to the Easter e-cards at www.elca.org/ecards/holidays/hunger/easter.html  Remember, gift donations to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal, ELCA Disaster Response, Stand With Africa and other ELCA ministries (www.elca.org/giving) make for meaningful Easter and hostess gifts (mmm...that was mighty good ham).

This week's front page features from The Lutheran magazine

Two parts faith, one part humor: Do the two mix? (Illustration at left.)

A laughing matter: Iowa congregation reaches out with laughter club.

The Easter crowd: I used to criticize these occasional worshipers, but not now.

Fun in adult Sunday school? "People love to learn when laughing is involved."

Also: Calling all members.

Also: Doing the impossible.

Also: Alleluia!

Continuing Education Opportunities

How can a congregation recognize and address anxiety before that anxiety fuels destructive conflict within the faith community? What can church leaders do to become more aware of their own emotional reactivity, and the way that their presence influences the ebb and flow of anxiety within a congregation? Congregational leaders will find help with such questions at the Healthy Congregations workshop that the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center (LMPC) will conduct on September 21-22, 2007. The workshop, led by LMPC Executive Director Richard Blackburn, will be held at Christ Community Mennonite Church in Schaumburg, Illinois.  Download a brochure for more info.

The Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi would like to extend a special invitation to your church musicians, choristers and clergy to be a part of the annual Mississippi Conference on Church Music and Liturgy, July 31-Aug 5. The special guest this year will be the Rev. Dr. Paul Westermeyer of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. The conference theme will be "Rise, O Church." More information on the conference is available from www.mississippiconference.org . If you or your church would like to be added to the mailing list for this year's conference brochure, please email the conference director, Ellen Johnston, ellenjohnston95@hotmail.com  before Tuesday, April 10.
