ELCA News & Events

Partnering in mission - Vision for Mission was established by the ELCA Churchwide Assembly in 1993 as a special appeal to support global and domestic mission through "celebrative giving." You become a partner with the ELCA when you participate. Gifts come alive through the ministries of the ELCA here in the United States and around the world, following the essential priorities and directions you establish in churchwide assemblies.

"Thanks be to God!" - Join your church in "Worship Jubilee," celebrating the publication of Evangelical Lutheran Worship and the future renewal of worship in the ELCA. The event will take place August 3-6 at Navy Pier, Chicago, just prior to the 2007 Churchwide Assembly. Registering before April 30 for the Jubilee will save $30 per participant. Come! Experience a variety of worship forms. Sing, pray and give thanks!

This week's front page features from The Lutheran magazine

'Let anyone with ears to hear listen': David Rhoads works to create first-century experience of Scripture. (Photo at left.)

Moving day: I learn again that God never abandons us.

Voices from Scripture by Heart: Seminarians tell their stories of memorizing and performing.

A pause for prayer: 3,000 participate in Christian Peace Witness for Iraq.

Also: Martinez, Caribbean Synod bishop, dies.

Also: Stuempfle, Lutheran church leader, dies.

Also: Parties file appeals in discipline case.

Here’s a look at the May issue of The Lutheran. This issue went online Tuesday, April 24. In-home delivery begins Thursday, April 26.

NURTURING CHILDREN: In May, The Lutheran’s cover story focuses on children. “Tending souls” offers parents and caregivers five ways to nurture spirituality in children. For Martin Luther’s take on rearing children, read “Honor goes both ways,” parenting is time-consuming, tedious—and a divine office. A one-page study guide is included in the print edition, with a longer version available for download for $3.50 (free to Web premium members) at www.thelutheran.org  (click on “resources/guides”).

SPRING READING: The Lutheran’s May issue has much to offer. In “Page by page,” find out how keeping a journal can help you live through life’s most difficult times—and heal. Read “Chocolate as bait” to see how a Maryland congregation turned evangelism into a sweet endeavor. In “Let anyone with ears to hear listen,” discover how a seminary professor works to create a first-century experience of Scripture. Learn about a ministry that provides opportunities for Sudanese refugees by reading “An oasis in Cairo.” And in “On the right track,” meet Ken Boehm, a chaplain who serves the needs of workers at Churchill Downs.

LET’S TALK: Visit The Lutheran’s discussion forums at www.thelutheran.org  this May. Entire month: In honor of Mother’s Day and to complement our article “With just one word,” share your mother stories. May 1-8: Read “Jellobration breaks the coffee-hour mold” and then share your favorite fundraising idea or Jell-O recipe with James Bash, a member of First Immanuel Lutheran Church, Portland, Ore. May 8-5: Discuss mentoring troubled youth with Philip Day of Lutheran Family Services of Virginia.

LET’S STUDY: In May, The Lutheran is offering three study guides that are available for download for $3.50 (free to Web premium members) at www.thelutheran.org  (click on “resources/guides”). They include: “Tending souls,” helping parents nurture spirituality in children, and “Honor goes both ways,” parenting is time-consuming and tedious—and a divine gift; “Moving day,” author learns again of God’s constant care as he and his wife leave their “last” nest; and “With just one word,” adult daughter finds that “Mommy” is the only word to utter at her mother’s death.

Coming up in May

• Ten reasons to worship year round.

• Walter Wangerin, ELCA pastor, writer and former speaker of Grace Matters, tells why he’s not fighting a battle with cancer.
