ELCA Outdoor Ministries
Although many ELCA camps, conference centers and retreat centers are open year-round, we think of them mostly in the summer, when children and youth take full advantage of facilities to have fun, go on servant and adventure programs, work as counselors, and in general populate the 145 facilities which serve nearly half a million people each year. This summer's camp curriculum is "Listen! God is Calling," about how God communicates with us.
"A New Home, A New Life" is Refugee Day Theme
In today's world there are almost 21 million refugees, displaced people and others "of concern" to the U.N. June 20 is World Refugee Day, and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service recommends resources for congregations to use on Sunday, June 17, or Sunday, June 24. In fact, LIRS has mailed a resource packet to all ELCA congregations. Items available on the Web include event planning materials, publicity materials and handouts including bulletin inserts and bookmarks, as well as litanies to be used in worship.
This week's front page features from The Lutheran magazine
Page by page: Keeping a journal can help you live through life's most difficult times -- and heal. (Photo at left.)
No generation gap: Farmer keeps the faith … and the farm.
Musical potluck: Artist shows his Lutheran roots.
An oasis in Cairo: Ministry provides opportunities for Sudanese refugees.
Also: Sunday
Also: Experiential worship.
Also: The Curse and the Blessing.
Part Two of "An Inconvenient Truth: A Global Warning" The First Tuesday Brown Bag in May ended with the polar icecaps melting. The second half of the award-winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," will be shown and discussed in June. Inspired by the "traveling global warming show" of former Vice President Al Gore, the film presents what he calls our "planetary emergency" and "the biggest moral challenge facing our global civilization." The discussion in May raised the concerns of those who do not share Gore's views. Tuesday, June 5, Noon-1:00 p.m. Council Room, 11th Floor Lutheran Center, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago Directions: http://www.elca.org/localmap.html Directed by Davis Guggenheim, "An Inconvenient Truth" won two Oscars from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences -- one for Best Documentary/Feature and the other for "I Need to Wake Up," a song Melissa Etheridge wrote for the film. The ELCA Interunit Staff Team on Faith, Science and Technology hosts this brown bag presentation and discussion.
