Walking Together will be back the week before Sunday, August 19 as your Communication Director will be on vacation for a week followed by a week at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
Mark your calendars and plan to attend one of this year's NI Synod Misison Gatherings which will be held in each conference this fall. Mission Gatherings are an excellent annual event of the synod which gives lay and rostered people a chance to come together with Bishop Wollersheim to talk about an important topic. This year we'll talk about taking care of your rostered leaders. Leaders who live a balanced life and care for their health and wellness are best able to pass on their faith and model healthy behaviors for others. Don't miss one of these great events. Invite your whole congregation. Each event will begin at 7 pm with registration at 6:30 pm.
September 11 - St. Paul, Sterling - Central Conference
September 13 - Prince of Peace, Freeport - Northwest Conference
September 20 - Shepherd of the Hill, Lockport - East Conference
October 11 - Bethlehem, DeKalb - Northeast Conference
October 16 - Trinity, Ottawa - South Conference
October 18 - St. Mark, Rockford - North Conference
November 1 - Immanuel, Altona - Southwest Conference
November 6 - Calvary, Moline - West Conference
You are invited to Mission Interpreter Training on September 29 beginning at 9:00 A.M. at St. John’s in Sterling. Fifty friendly faces are sought to spread the great stories of ministry in, with, and by the NIS. Mission Interpreters are faithful people interested in “getting the word out” to congregations and the public at large. Mission Interpreters are volunteers who have a heart for sharing the good news and speak occasionally as asked in congregations and to the media about NIS, the ELCA and related ministries. Keith Mundy will be helping with the training as well as Pr. Mark Oehlert. Interested persons are asked to call St. John’s at 815.625.2634 or e-mail stjohnsofffice@yahoo.com .

Lutheran World Relief announced this week that, effective immediately, toothpaste should no longer be included in LWR health kits assembled and donated by Lutherans throughout the U.S. Recent reports from the Food and Drug Administration about the safety of some imported toothpastes, which have been found to contain toxic chemicals, as well as concerns about the expiration dates associated with toothpaste, prompted LWR’s decision to remove toothpaste from the health kit contents as a safety precaution. Donors of health kits are asked to stop including toothpaste in the kits, to remove the toothpaste from any kits they have already assembled, and to mark their boxes “Health Kits – No Toothpaste” before delivering the kits to an LWR ingathering or warehouse. What is an evangelizing church? New and old resources to help individuals, leaders, congregations and synods live out their calling to be an evangelizing church are based on the ELCA's Evangelism Strategy document, now available online in Chinese, English and Spanish. Resources are centered around prayer, witness and discipleship, and range from assessment tools to devotional materials to DVDs and PowerPoint presentations on evangelism techniques.
ELCA responds to Central Plains floods.
Flood waters, contaminated with 45,000 gallons of oil, left a messy situation in several small cities and widespread rural areas in Kansas, Oklahoma and other states; areas that have experienced the most widespread damage are often low-income areas. Lutheran Disaster Response is assessing the extent of damage and developing long-term plans for response to this hurricane-like disaster, following hard on the heels of the Greensburg, Kansas, tornado. You can be part of the solution to this problem.
