This certification distinguishes LOMC as a camp that meets mandatory standards for health, safety, and program quality. The camp has been reaccredited since 1975. Mark your calendars and plan to attend one of this year's NI Synod Mission Gatherings which will be held in each conference this fall. Mission Gatherings are an excellent annual event of the synod which gives lay and rostered people a chance to come together with Bishop Wollersheim to talk about an important topic. This year we'll talk about taking care of your rostered leaders. Leaders who live a balanced life and care for their health and wellness are best able to pass on their faith and model healthy behaviors for others. Don't miss one of these great events. Invite your whole congregation. Each event will begin at 7 pm with registration at 6:30 pm.

Book of Faith: Open Scripture. Join the Conversation. The Book of Faith Initiative will engage many partners to enhance fluency in the first language of faith, the language of Scripture. Individually, as congregations, institutions and as a whole church, we have a calling as a people renewed, enlivened, and empowered by the Word. New resources, broader availability of existing resources, and many settings for conversation will carry the initiative forward. When we open our Bibles, we join a conversation that God initiates.
A powerful earthquake hit southern Peru on Aug. 15, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. ELCA World Hunger, in partnership with Action by Churches Together, will respond with emergency funds. You can help by offering your prayers and giving to ELCA International Disaster Response — Peru earthquake. Please share the Litany for International Disaster Response with your congregation.

The First Tuesday Brown Bag in September will actually be the second Tuesday -- September 11 -- to avoid the Labor Day holiday. The ELCA Interunit Staff Team on Faith, Science and Technology hosts this brown bag presentation and discussion. Shane Caldwell explores the principles and assumptions that lead some scientists to claim that religion is obsolete, and those that lead religious believers to an opposite conclusion. Consider the notion of beauty that mathematicians and theoretical physicists come to rely upon, but see that its use in reaching conclusions about the meaning of the physical universe often amounts to a blatant fallacy. Use this knowledge in the contest of ideas that goes on in our society. Tuesday, September 11, Noon-1:00 p.m. Pentecost, 11th Floor, Lutheran Center, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago. Directions: http://www.elca.org/localmap.html
