If your congregation has been impacted by the recent flooding, please contact Lisa Hassenstab, Director of Church Relations, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, Co-Coordinator, Lutheran Disaster Response-Illinois, Phone 847-390-1447; Cell 773-339-1497, www.lssi.org . As the situation continues to develop and assessments are done, there is something that all our congregations and residents can be doing now to help prevent long-term harm: practice safe clean-up after the flood, and teach others how. For example: If you have health problems - do not attempt the clean-up yourself. Always use protective gear. Use plenty of bleach - 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Do not restore or replace damaged areas for at least 3-5 days - allow complete drying. Remove wet, damaged carpet and drywall up to a foot above the observable damage. Do invite an experienced inspector to look at your clean-up before proceeding with restoration. Complete information for mold remediation can be found here: www.fema.gov/rebuild/recover/mold.shtm . Comprehensive information for clean-up and recovery can be found here: http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/disaster/after.html . What you can do: Become familiar with this information yourself. Forward this information to your network, membership, congregation. Download and distribute this information to survivors, volunteers, and others who would benefit. Please also continue to pray for all of the families and communities affected by this widespread flooding, and for those who will be assisting in recovery efforts in the months and years to come.

ELCA News & Events

Lutherans respond to Midwest floods. ELCA Domestic Disaster Response, under the umbrella of Lutheran Disaster Response, has begun assisting people affected by severe flooding in Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. A series of severe storms dumped excessive amounts of rain in the region, causing rivers to overflow and 26 deaths across several states. You can help with gifts and by volunteering, as well as prayers for all involved.

Is God calling you to ministry? Are you thinking about a theological education? The eight seminaries of the ELCA invite you to experience seminary life during a free weekend visit or information days. Attend classes with other prospective students, worship with students, enjoy an evening or two in a dorm and spend some time relaxing and participating in the seminary community life. Each seminary provides several opportunities between September 18, 2007, and June 19, 2008.
