Continuing Education Opportunities

GREENING YOUR CONGREGATION. The Metro-Chicago Synod is sponsoring a Green Congregation Training Workshop, “Stewardship of Creation.” This workshop will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2006, from 8:00 to noon at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights. The workshop will be led by David Rhoads of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and Director of the Green Congregation Program and representatives of the Metro-Chicago Synod. The purpose of the workshop is to offer practical, hands-on guidance and (free) resources for introducing care for creation into the life of your congregation—worship, education, property, discipleship at home and work, and public ministry. Anyone interested in greening your congregation should attend. We encourage teams of 3 to 5 people who would follow up in your congregation. Come and learn how to get started. Please mark your calendar and let the pastor know of your interest. Put your “team” together now! To assist with set-up and food, please register your participation by e-mailing register your congregation and the approximate number of participants with Erma Alvarez at the Metro-Chicago Synod office, phone 773-248-0021 or e-mail at ealvarez@mcselca.org . You may address any questions to the event organizer, Sumie Song at ssong@lstc.edu .

Don't just learn about the science and faith curriculum being developed for ELCA youth ministries, do it! Dana Hendershot will lead a fun, hands-on overview of three sessions: "Faith and Science Dialogue: Can it Happen?" "Are there Others?" and "Brain Connections!" The curriculum is written for high school youth and can foster an excellent discussion among adults. Feedback is welcome. Thursday, October 11, Noon-1:00 p.m., Epiphany, 11th Floor, Lutheran Center, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago, Directions: http://www.elca.org/localmap.html . Dana Hendershot worked at the Keys Marine Lab and the Dolphin Research Center in the Florida Keys while earning her bachelor's degree in psychology at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio. She was director of youth and education at Peace Lutheran Church, Sparta, Mich., where her two passions -- faith and science -- merged. Dana is now a senior at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, and she's developing a Science and Faith Youth Ministry Curriculum for the ELCA. The ELCA Interunit Staff Team on Faith, Science and Technology hosts this brown bag presentation and discussion.

News from Other Organizations

Holden Village, a Lutheran Retreat Center in the Cascade Mountains of Washington has been under an evacuation alert from the USFS since the Middle of August.  The Village is not currently threatened by the fire but the road to the village is not safe to travel at all times because of the close proximity of the fire.  Because of this situation Holden Village has lost a large portion of their yearly revenue.  They are in need of support in three ways: Give, Work, Pray.  You can read more about the fire and how the village is coping at http://www.holdenvillage.org .  Also, the folks at Old Lutheran www.oldlutheran.com will donate $4.00 from each pair of "Left Behind" apparel that they sell.  The staff that stayed in the village to maintain the village and work to protect it from fire have been known as the "Left Behind."  Please don't sit on your "left behind" and help support Holden Village during this time of need.

The public is invited to a Katie’s Cup Conversation luncheon on Tuesday, October 16, 11:45 - 1 pm

Reservations are requested and should be made by Monday, October 15. Contact Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries, 815/962-4279 or RALMmail@aol.com .
