The Synod’s upcoming Reformation/Ordination celebration will be 4 pm on Sunday, October 28 at Faith Lutheran Church in Rochelle. Janet Lepp, who has been called to serve St. James, Rock Island, will be ordained. Everyone is encouraged to attend! Rostered leaders and interns are invited to vest and process. The color of the day is red.
Congregation Council members, personnel committee members, rostered leaders, and all congregational leaders are encouraged to attend one of this year’s Mission Gatherings. There is no cost for this important event and all are welcome! Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. The program begins at 7 pm and ends at 9 pm. Mission Gatherings are excellent annual events of the synod which give lay and rostered people a chance to come together with Bishop Wollersheim and staff to talk about an important topic. This year’s Mission Gathering “Care and Support for Rostered Leaders” will focus on ways to provide these essential elements in the congregational setting. The principle is that if Rostered Leaders feel well supported they will be better able to support Congregational Leaders in their ministry. Dates and locations: November 1 - Immanuel, Altona - Southwest Conference; and November 6 - Calvary, Moline - West Conference.
The Northern Illinois Synod Congregational Resourcing Event (CRE) will take place Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta, Illinois. to them. Submission deadline for CRE workshops is November 30, 2007. Contact Pastor Karl Otto, Congregational Resourcing Event Coordinator, at drkarlotto@aol.com or phone: 815-547-6102 or Nancy Corey, NI Synod Registrar, at ncorey@nisynod.org or 309-794-4004.

Peace Not Walls is the campaign of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to learn, pray and act for peace with justice in the Holy Land. The 2005 ELCA Churchwide Assembly adopted this strategy to promote a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to call for a halt to construction of the separation barrier and its removal from Palestinian land. [More at FAQs]. They have extensive education resources about the situation in the Holy Land for use in congregations.

Update from the Task Force for the ELCA Studies on Sexuality:
Youth Study
By now, all ELCA congregations should have received copies of the youth sexuality study, Free in Christ to Care for the Neighbor: Lutheran Youth Talk about Human Sexuality. This adaptation of the December 2006 study, Free in Christ to Serve the Neighbor, engages senior high youth through music, movie clips, stories from young people, and activities. Bible study, prayer, and ELCA social teachings provide a foundation for youth as they reflect on topics such as: When is sex okay? How do creation and sin impact my view of sex? How do I respond to the way sexuality is depicted in popular culture?
The study invites senior high youth to apply a faith perspective as they discuss the world in which they live. Each of the six sessions features a take-home handout to help families continue the discussion. Later this month youth and leaders will be able to log on to a companion Web site to share their ideas in an online discussion forum and to find video clips as discussion starters. This will be located at www.elca.org/faithfuljourney/youth .
Work of the Task Force
The task force met October 5-6 to discuss biblical, ethical, and theological material that could form the foundation of a draft social statement on human sexuality. It also received a preliminary report on responses to the adult congregational study, met with the Conference of Bishops, and discussed the actions of the 2007 ELCA Churchwide Assembly with the secretary-elect of the ELCA.
Responding to the 2007 Churchwide Assembly The task force discussed how it might respond to the directive from the 2007 Churchwide Assembly regarding “policies that preclude practicing homosexual persons from the rosters of this church.” Because ELCA social statements are not documents of policy implementation, the response of the task force to the assembly action will be addressed in a separate recommendation.
Dates to Keep in Mind
Download a complete timelineleading up to the proposed sexuality social statement’s arrival at Churchwide Assembly in 2009. For now, key dates to keep in mind are:
November 1, 2007: deadline for responses to Free in Christ to Serve the Neighbor
December 15, 2007: deadline for response to Free in Christ to Care for the Neighbor: Lutheran Youth Talk about Human Sexuality
March 12, 2008: confidential release of draft social statement to ELCA rostered leaders
March 13, 2008: public release of draft social statement
March-November 2008: hearings on social statement draft
November 1, 2008: deadline for responses to be received by the task force.
Please keep the task force and advisory members in your prayers as we embark on the last phase of our journey together.
