A note from your Communication Director: In this week of Thanksgiving, I give thanks for all of you that read and send news items to Walking Together. It has been a great partnership since the first WT in September 2004. Our list of recipients keeps growing. Today we stand at 998 email addresses that receive WT each week. However, that number is deceptively low as there are a couple of group emails on that list (a single email that goes to many people). I also know of congregations that forward WT to their council members and other congregational leaders or post a printed version on their bulletin boards. So I know our readership is well over 1000. Do your council members and other leaders receive WT? Can you think of others in your congregation that would benefit from receiving WT? Please send their email addresses to karin@nisynod.org and I will include them in the listserv. If you forward WT to others, please send me their email addresses to save yourself a step. As always, your email addresses are safe and will only be used for WT. It's easy to do and will help us all better make Christ known. Thank you for your partnership, and may you have a blessed Thanksgiving -- Karin :)

Troubling the Waters for the Healing of the Church: A Journey for White Christians from Privilege to Partnership. It’s a “sign of hope” according to Bishop Hanson, leading us to new insights and bold action. Developed by the ELCA to work toward the vision of that Rainbow Church, that beloved community where everyone is treated as a person created in God’s image, it’s a year-long process of healing that will enrich the lives of participants. It consists of eight two-hour sessions and two retreats, one in Lent and the other during Pentecost Season. Dates and times will be set to meet the needs of those who choose to participate.“Troubling the waters…” will begin at the baptismal font in a commissioning service and focus throughout the year on the healing and cleansing waters of baptism. The goal is to free us from the guilt and shame that are so often associated with race and class issues, helping us to identify ways we can take responsibility, meeting our need for contribution, connection and inclusion. The hope is that it will be embraced by every congregation in our synod next year. Throughout the journey, participants will discover how to assist other congregations. For more information, or to register, contact Harlan Johnson, 815-968-5433, harlan@actualizations.net

On Saturday, February 16, 2008 the Greening of the Synod Task Force of the Social Ministry Committee will host a training event for congregational Green Teams offering practical and inspirational guidance and resources for the process of bringing "care of creation" into congregations. The event, under the leadership of David Rhoads (LSTC Director of the Green Congregation Program) will take place from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center, Oregon, IL. Anyone interested in "greening" your congregation is encouraged to attend. Congregational teams of 3-5 people would be ideal. There is no charge for the workshop. However, in order to adequately plan for set-up and food, please register your congregation and the approximate number of participants through Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center at 815-732-2220 or registrations@lomc.org . Questions may be directed to LOMC or Pastor Don Knowles at 815-246-9642 or pastor@immanuelearlville.net .

You can be proud to be a member of the ELCA! Look at some of the ministries YOU make possible through your congregation, synod, and churchwide organization. When you hear the stories you will proudly say, "Wow, the ELCA is really doing a lot!"
You support nearly 300 ELCA missionaries and volunteers in 47 countries. For example, you support the work of medical missionaries in Papua New Guinea. A church-supported hospital there provides affordable care to poor, rural patients. Recently one 10-year-old girl's life was saved. After a poisonous snakebite, her family rushed her to the hospital for the lifesaving antivenom. At $385 a dose, they could never have afforded it. But thanks to your support, they paid only $2. Find out more at www.elca.org .

ELCA Election Resource for 2008 A resource guide to encourage, empower and equip Lutherans to engage responsibly in the 2008 election cycle, "Called to be a Public Church" is intended to encourage congregations, college and seminary communities to participate in election activities. It also contains nonpartisan issue briefs on issues related to the ELCA social statements. It can be downloaded from the Web or ordered from Augsburg Fortress Publishers.

Looking for a few good missionaries! At present ELCA Global Mission has 89 open opportunities for service around the globe, from Hong Kong to Holland, from Argentina to Tanzania. Occupations range from mechanic to professor, church musician to computer teacher, administrator to pediatrician. As we approach the gift-giving season, think about giving yourself, and what a gift you receive in return when you serve God by serving others

Called To Be a Public Church: 2008 ELCA Voting and Civic Participation Guide is now available for download from the ELCA Web site. As a resource guide to encourage, empower, and equip Lutherans to engage responsibly in the 2008 election cycle, Called To Be a Public Church is intended to encourage congregations to participate in voter registration drives, voter mobilization campaigns, and poll monitoring. The guide emphasizes the importance of keeping all election-related activities nonpartisan and within the confines of the law, and provides guidance for how to do so. Nonpartisan issue briefs on issues related to the ELCA social statements are also included. Available for free download now or  order from Augsburg Fortress

This week's front page features from The Lutheran magazine

The spirituality of being single: It offers us all insight into what it really means to be family.

Toward a more multicultural campus: ELCA colleges and universities work to increase ethnic diversity.

Augsburg students 'step up': College housing and counseling support students in recovery.

Ah, the old blessing of ... the traffic light? Maryland churchgoers have long lobbied for traffic signal.

Also: Letters: War in Iraq still controversial.

Also: My View: A fire in our church.

Also: Megachurch myths.
