On Saturday, February 16, 2008 the Synod Green Team will host a training event for congregational Green Teams offering practical and inspirational guidance and resources for the process of bringing "care of creation" into congregations. The event, under the leadership of David Rhoads (LSTC Director of the Green Congregation Program) will take place from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center, Oregon, IL. Anyone interested in "greening" your congregation is encouraged to attend. Congregational teams of 3-5 people would be ideal. There is no charge for the workshop. However, in order to adequately plan for set-up and food, please register your congregation and the approximate number of participants through Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center at 815-732-2220 or registrations@lomc.org . Questions may be directed to LOMC or Pastor Don Knowles at 815-246-9642 or pastor@immanuelearlville.net .

St. Mark, Rockford, invites you to Music Man and Friends, Sunday, January 27 @ 7:00 pm. Enjoy an evening of a delightfully eclectic mix of solo works, chamber music, jazz stylings, and a few surprises performed by Joel Ross, and his multi-talented guests.

Mwangaza Education for Partnership is a joint effort of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) to address the challenges of formal and informal education in Tanzania. Mwangaza, a Kiswahili word meaning enlightenment, promotes teaching, learning and leadership development between companioned regions of these national church bodies. Of the twenty ELCA companion synods concerned, the Northern Illinois Synod has been the most consistent in personal, material and spiritual support for and participated at the inception of this remarkable accompaniment for education in Tanzania. Our synod has sent more teachers to seminars and has hosted more Tanzanian teachers (while U.S. visas were still available) than any other. Three of the FoM board members are from NIS, and two of these hold significant offices as treasurer and secretary. Finally, our participation through Mwangaza has helped to open anew and reenergize our companionship with the Arusha Diocese where our participation in several other ministries has combined and served to "make Christ known" throughout the world and here at home. Find out more at www.mwangazaeducationforpartnership.org .

You can be proud to be a member of the ELCA! Look at some of the ministries YOU make possible through your congregation, synod, and churchwide organization. When you hear the stories you will proudly say, "Wow, the ELCA is really doing a lot!" You help plant new congregations at home, too. 358 ELCA congregations have been organized since 1988. Did you know that more than half of new starts are in ethnic specific and multicultural contexts? Plus, research shows that fast-growing congregations have a higher percentage of people who are newer to the faith—people who began worshiping within the last five years—than average congregations. Working closely with synods across the ELCA, you are helping start new congregations across the country, especially in fast-growing areas. Find out more at www.elca.org .
