St. James, Forreston, was selected as the featured congregation for the upcoming televised Christmas program for Agribusiness Today, a nationally syndicated program produced and hosted by Orion Samuelson and Max Armstrong, also broadcasters of WGN Radio, US Farm Report. The congregation was chosen as a rural congregation that represents the ever changing face of rural America and for its contributions to the communities it serves. The congregation is served by Rev. Karen Capel, a Wartburg Theological Seminary graduate of 2003. She also served the congregation as interim Pastor during her internship.
The Director of Music is Beth Nelson Chase, VP for Mission Support at Wartburg Seminary. The hour long television feature includes music and interviews with the congregation’s Youth and Senior Choirs, Bell Choir and both the Pastor and Director of Music. Mr. Samuelson, a life-long Lutheran, included commentary on the need for valued leaders in serving rural parishes as well as the value of theological education as provided at Wartburg Seminary. Troubling the Waters for the Healing of the Church: A Journey for White Christians from Privilege to Partnership. Its a sign of hope according to Bishop Hanson, leading us to new insights and bold action. Developed by the ELCA to work toward the vision of that Rainbow Church, that beloved community where everyone is treated as a person created in Gods image, its a year-long process of healing that will enrich the lives of participants. It consists of eight two-hour sessions and two retreats, one in Lent and the other during Pentecost Season. Dates and times will be set to meet the needs of those who choose to participate. Troubling the waters will begin at the baptismal font in a commissioning service and focus throughout the year on the healing and cleansing waters of baptism. The goal is to free us from the guilt and shame that are so often associated with race and class issues, helping us to identify ways we can take responsibility, meeting our need for contribution, connection and inclusion. The hope is that it will be embraced by every congregation in the Northern Illinois Synod next year. Throughout the journey, participants will discover how to assist other congregations.
