The Northern Illinois Synod Congregational Resourcing Event (CRE) will take place Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta, Illinois. This year's theme is “God Said What??!! Getting Lutherans to Read the Bible.” The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ralph W. Klein, Christ Seminary-Seminex Professor of Old Testament and editor of Currents in Theology and Mission. Almost 50 other workshops will be presented during the three sessions. Bring many folks from your congregation, so you can get as much information as possible.

"We Are One in the Spirit " will lift up and celebrate multicultural ministries of the ELCA and our synod congregations. It will feature leaders from the ELCA Multicultural Ministry Saff in Chicago, ELCA Ethnic Ministry Directors and representatives of local congregations with special multicultural ministries. The event will be Saturday, February 9, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa. Brochures with full information and directions to the church are available to download HERE. Please copy the brochure and publicize this special event. Thank you.

The In Kind offering at Synod Assembly will be a donation of environmentally friendly cleaning supplies and gift cards (probably to Menards) for LOMC. LOMC is designated as the “Synod greening” center.

2008 ELCA Global Lenten Series: "Global Companions: Who is My Neighbor?" Want ideas for Lenten midweek or Sunday services with a global focus? Stories and sermons lift up the work of ELCA missionaries in Madagascar, Senegal, Peru, Costa Rica, Japan, Egypt, Lithuania, and Palestine. You can be proud to be a member of the ELCA! Look at some of the ministries YOU make possible through your congregation, synod, and churchwide organization. When you hear the stories you will proudly say, "Wow, the ELCA is really doing a lot!" How do we fund all that we together as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America? As a response to God's many blessings, you give your offering. Then your congregation gathers the offerings and uses some of that money to support its ministries. Some of those funds go to support your synod. Some funds support churchwide ministries across the United States and around the world. Here's a little known fact: Some churchwide funds come BACK to your congregation in the way of grants, services, programs and resources. Find out more at www.elca.org .

Coming Up on Grace Matters ... Immaculée Ilibagiza (Part I) –Burning Hate John 15:23-25 Immaculée Ilibagiza is an amazing woman. She narrowly escaped death in the Rwandan genocide of 1994 by hiding in the bathroom of her pastor’s house for 91 consecutive days. In this compelling interview, the first in a two-part series, Immaculée gives an inside look at the faith that carried her through a horrific ordeal. She discusses the mystery of hatred and the necessity of Christian hope.  Find air times and stations, and read more at www.gracematters.org

Discuss worship
Robert A. Rimbo writes the "Worship whys" column for The Lutheran. He's pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New York City, and former bishop of the Southeast Michigan Synod. Join him today through Jan. 22 to discuss the "whys" of worship. This month's column examines the use of incense, but previous columns have addressed Advent remembering, table grace, spiritual "stuff," praying and more praying, and more. “Perfect Potential: Seeking Excellence in Ministry” - 2008 LSTC Leadership Conference February 11–12, 2008, at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC)  The conference explores questions such as “What is the Christian understanding of excellence?” “What does it mean to talk about excellence in ministry?” and “How do we simultaneously celebrate and survive ministry?” Conference fees are $80 per day or $155 for both days. Recent LSTC graduates (2005- 07) may register for $100 for two days. For more information, email leadershipconference@lstc.edu or visit www.lstc.edu .

Faith & Science Brown Bag -- Perhaps We Are As We Do - Exploring the Possibility of Human Uniqueness What is a human being? Humanity seems to be both a part of the natural order and set apart from the natural order. Science often emphasizes humanity's "naturalness" while a host of theological and ethical considerations seem to require that humanity is something more. Lea Schweitz asks if we can do justice to both of these intuitions, saying G.W. Leibniz, a 17th century German Lutheran, offers a way to split the difference by suggesting that we are what we do. Drawing on his work, she will argue that this moral view of the human species provides a way for understanding ourselves as both unique in nature and yet part of it. Thursday, February 7, Noon-1:00 p.m. Council Room, 11th Floor Lutheran Center, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago Directions: http://www.elca.org/localmap.html

World-renowned theologian the Rev. Dr. Wanda Deifelt will deliver the 2008 Hein-Fry Lecture at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago on Thursday, March 13. The Lutheran church’s relationship with other Christian communities throughout the world is the theme of the 2008 lectures. At 9:30 a.m., Dr. Deifelt will present “Does Lutheran theology justify fundamentalism?” At 1:00 p.m., she will deliver the second lecture, “Advocacy and political participation: Is there a Lutheran political theology?” The Rev. Dr. Kurt K. Hendel, Bernard, Fisher, Westberg Distinguished Ministry Professor of Reformation History will respond to the lectures at 2:00 p.m. The free lectures will be held in the Common Room (350) of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. A reception will follow Dr. Hendel’s response.
The annual Hein-Fry Lecture Series offers free lectures to the public at each of the ELCA seminaries on pressing theological issues facing the church. The goals of the lectures are to foster original scholarship; encourage broad dialogue throughout the church on a theological topic; and to give seminary faculty, students, clergy, church leaders and other interested persons access to leading theologians. For more details about the 2008 Hein-Fry Lectures, visit www.lstc.edu or www.elca.org/heinfry/2008/

Desert Cross Lutheran Church in Tempe, Arizona is pleased to host this year’s ELCA “Churches Starting Churches” Conference April 13-15, 2008. The conference is intended for congregations interested in, or actively involved in, mission expansion ministry. One of the major objectives of the conference is to facilitate “nuts and bolts” discussions related to churches starting churches. Therefore, we are encouraging congregations to bring clergy, staff and lay persons who are or will be actively involved in their mission outreach efforts. The brochure and registration form is available at www.DesertCross.org . We are asking your help in disseminating this information to congregations in your synod.
