Tragedy at NIU

Lutheran Campus Ministry at NIU (at the corner of Lucinda & Normal) is staying open 24/7 to serve the students who remain on campus. They will continue to serve the needs of students when they begin returning to campus.

A candlelight service of prayer and remembrance is held every evening at 6:30 in front of the six large crosses that have been placed in front of their building. Mourners have written messages of hope on the crosses.

Your prayers for the students, their families, the faculty and staff of NIU are needed. LCM also needs healthy food and paper products to serve the hundreds of kids who go there to seek comfort, prayer, and Christian love. Their needs will become greater when the students start back to school. Please do not call campus ministry, as they are flooded with calls and need to minister to the students. If you have any questions, please contact Karin Graddy, Communication Director at karin@nisynod.org or 815-762-0758. Visit the LCM page for photos, video, and stories of tragedy and hope. From Lutheran Disaster Response-Illinois: The tragic shooting at Northern Illinois University has affected us all. We have all seen the media reports and many of us know people directly connected with the NIU community. The campus community is rallying support as an immediate response to those in need. We also know that this event has immediate repercussions throughout the state of Illinois and beyond as students return to their families, as families worry about their students and as children and other vulnerable members of our communities are exposed to the anxiety of adults and the media deluge. Those burdened by this tragedy will seek out friends, family members and pastors. Attached is a document developed by Lutheran Disaster Response for pastors following the Virginia Tech tragedy. It has been adapted for distribution to pastors to help them respond to the NIU tragedy. We encourage you to distribute this material to pastors to support them in their response. Some brief highlights of the document:
o Those needing care are spread out throughout Illinois and beyond now.
o Most pastors will come into contact with individuals suffering the effects of this tragedy
o As trusted spiritual leaders, pastors can play a crucial role in healing
o The tragedy is different for everyone - listen to the unique experience of the individual coming to you
o Listen, be with and offer resources to those who come to you - there is no wrong way to respond, so be confident in your abilities
o Spiritual trauma can be profound and require much time and patience in your response
o Be aware of symptoms and behaviors that indicate the need for professional involvement
o Attend to your own self care as you vicariously experience the trauma through your care of others
o Know you are not alone - the faith community stands with you.
Specific resources pastors should be aware of include:
o Lutheran Child and Family Services. 1-800-363-LCFS. Crisis counselors are available, information and referral for services, and consultation is available to pastors and congregations.
o Lutheran Social Services of Illinois- LSSI's LDR coordinators Lisa Hassenstab lisa.hassenstab@lssi.org /847-390-1447 and Dan Schwick dan.schwick@lssi.org /847-390-1418 are available for information and referrals.

All of the students, their families, faculty and staff of NIU

Joe Peterson, son of John and Kay, and nephew of Craig Peterson (former NIS Council member), all of First, Pecatonica. Joe was giving the lecture at Cole Hall when the tragedy occurred. He wasn't hurt very much. Just a slight gunshot wound on his shoulder. He is on an emotional roller coaster though and needs to be remembered in prayer. Pray for him to find God in this struggle.
