A note from your Synod Communication Director: You may have noticed the absence of Walking Together for the last couple of weeks. The organization that previously handled our listserv went through some server changes which slowed several issues of Walking Together, then became unreliable (You may have received the last issue twice, and over a week late). While the company was very good, and may soon work out their kinks, I wanted to move to a more reliable service. The Synod is now using Constant Contact, quickly becoming and industry standard in email lists. Walking Together also has a new look. Please share questions or comments with me at Karin@nisynod.org

gmGrace Matters This Week : Bill McKibben – Treating Our Planet Courteously Isaiah 24 Few subjects are more urgent than the crisis of our planet. The stresses we put on the natural resources of planet earth, not to mention the air we breathe and the water we drink, are growing each day. Our personal behaviors and global economies are all contributing to the crisis. Bill McKibben, author and writer-in-residence at Middlebury College in Vermont, is one of nation’s most articulate spokespersons on the environment, climate change and the need for all people to live more lightly. His personal faith powers much of his message.

April 13, the fourth Sunday of Easter, is Good Shepherd Sunday. It’s a day to focus on ways that the church carries out its shepherding ministry today . . . a day to ask, “How does the church care for people in need in our community?”  Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) — your congregation’s statewide social ministry organization — has been caring for God’s lambs and sheep for more than 140 years. As a ministry of the ELCA’s three synods in Illinois and your congregation, LSSI serves approximately 57,000 people each year — children, men, women and families — in 80-plus locations throughout the state. For a complete list of LSSI’s services, visit www.LSSI.org. For more information about Lutheran Social Services of Illinois or about Good Shepherd/LSSI Sunday, please contact Pr. Daniel Schwick, LSSI’s assistant to the president, at 847/390-1418 or at Dan.Schwick@LSSI.org. To arrange for a preacher or other speaker from LSSI, please contact Stephen Taylor, coordinator of the Office of Church and Government Relations, at 847/635-4653 or at Stephen.Taylor@LSSI.org.
