Grace Matters - April 13, 2008 - Robert Abernethy - Depth. Heft. Gravity. Psalm 139. All of us want to live lives of meaning. No person seeks to drift through life with a purposelessness. Yet some individuals have the gift of thinking with clarity on matters of the heart. Some know exactly how to put their faith into words. These are people, by and large, who live and speak with depth, heft and gravity. Bob Abernethy is the executive editor and host of the PBS program "Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly." He joins the program to discuss why lives of meaning matter so much to him.
The largest gathering of Women of the ELCA - the Seventh Triennial Gathering, will be July 10-13, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Gathering features worship, Bible study, inspiring speakers, and workshops focused on helping us better understand our faith and what it means to live it out in our congregations and communities as baptized children of God. The Lutheran School of Theology is offering a special interfaith program on the environment on Tuesday, April 22, from 7-9 pm in LSTC Room 350. Two speakers, one representing Islam and the other representing Judaism, will share their traditions' approach to caring for creation. These talks will be followed by a panel discussion and conversation with the audience.The evening will conclude with a reception. Divorce Recovery Workshop: How do I deal? How do I heal? Healing: Planning for a New Future, Tuesday, May 6, 7 pm, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 3300 Rural Street, Rockford
$10. This workshop will focus on developing new roles and activities and building a sense of community as a single person. The workshop will be led by Janna Becherer, NCC, MED, and Lutheran Ministries staff. Open to all separated and divorced persons, regardless of any religious affiliation. Katie's Cup Conversations begins a three-part series on Homelessness. Tuesday, April 15, 11:45 am - 1 pm - a panel of local and Chicago area professionals will present a comprehensive look at local, state, and federal policies regarding the homeless. Stockholm Inn, 2420 Charles Street, Rockford, $10 covers lunch and program (cash or check only, please). The second program, on April 29, will address the day-to-day practices of working with Rockford's homeless population. The third in the series, on May 13, will present a series of pre-recorded interviews with local people who have experienced homelessness. Don't miss these interesting conversations!
