The Professional Leaders Conferenceplanning committee is pleased to announce that this year's PLC will feature Dr. Richard Bliese, President of Luther Seminary. This excellent annual event will be September 28-30 at a new location. Because of the demolition of Sinsinawa's dorm wing, the event will be held at the beautiful facilities at Bishop Lane Retreat Center in Rockford. Bishop Lane is hidden away in the midst of 90 beautifully wooded acres and landscaped yard. It's not unusual to see deer and other wildlife as you enjoy a walk along the lovely pond or through the quiet woods and the outdoor Stations of the Cross. Download a brochureto see photos and learn more about the facilities. Registration will begin after Synod Assembly in June. Mark your calendars and plan for an outstanding event.

Coming up on Grace Matters: February 1, 2009, Elizabeth Marquardt - Children and the Painful Consequences of Divorce, Mark 10:2-12. It is not uncommon to hear divorced couples speaking admirably of their children's resilience in coping with their own separate lives. Whether it is over confidence, guilt, or a desire to believe that one's own kids are exceptional in this regard, we cannot know the different forces that guide parents to speak like this, but author Elizabeth Marquardt calls much of it "happy talk" - talk that denies the very painful consequences that go with every divorce. Host Peter Marty reflects on the spiritual side of this pain.... Find Grace Matters in your area. |

Do Media Presentations of Science Shape Our Social and Religious Identity? Tuesday, February 3, Noon-1:00 pm, Lutheran Center, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago. Directions: http://www.elca.org/localmap.html
Elonda Clay (doctoral candidate at LSTC, studying religion and science who has already earned bachelor of science, master of library and information science, master of divinity and master of theology degrees in religion and science) will discuss her interests in media, ritual, science and "the changing concepts of race and gender in post genomic genetic discourses." Today's messages have become the media from which we draw meaning in everyday life. "These transformations have a profound impact for the pathways and contexts in which social and religious identities are taking place." Perceptions of science are shaped by the media -- forensic science on television's CSI, genetic engineering in the movie "Gattaca," genetic anthropology in the PBS documentaries The Journey of Man and Oprah's Roots, and DNA paternity testing on various TV talk shows. How do these perceptions shape the image in which we were created?
