Fast Facts: Malaria can be contained. All we need is the colective will to address root causes of poverty. In the 1930s alone, millions of malaria cases were recorded throughout the U.S., primarily in southern states. But beginning with the founding of the Centers for Disease Control in 1946, a massive elimination campaign was undertaken. America's affluence was a major asset. Almost everyone could get to a doctor; windows could be screened; resources were available to bulldoze mosquito-breeding swamps. By 1950, transmission of malaria was halted in the U.S.
