NIS News 

Read a message from Bishop Wollersheim regarding the Report and Recommendations from the Task Force for ELCA Studies on Sexuality which will come before the National Convention in August. The Report addresses and makes "recommendations on changes to any policies that preclude practicing homosexual persons from the rosters of this church."
   
Everyone is encouraged to attend the NIS Diakonia Graduation Saturday, July 18 at 2 pm, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 4700 Augustana Drive, Rockford. Rev. Congregations involved in global partnerships, and others interested in finding out more, are invited to meet Dr. Mark Jacobson, Director of the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre in Tanzania. The Centre, which opened last fall, was built, in part, with funds raised by the Northern Illinois Synod. Dr. Jacobson and his wife, Linda, will be Grace Lutheran Church, 343 Grand Ave., Loves Park, from 10 am - noon on Monday, July 27. Come to welcome the Jacobsons and learn more about what's happening at the Aursha Lutheran Medical Centre and the Selian Lutheran Hospital in our companion Synod, the Arusha Diocese in Tanzania. It's three Lutheran pastors on a bamboo bike made for three (a triplet) riding 13,000 miles over 100 days to to raise at least $5 million to fight world hunger. All are invited to a Coffee with the Bishop. Northern Illinois Synod Bishop Gary Wollersheim will host four informal Saturday morning conversations this fall. Topics will include the August ELCA Churchwide Assembly and other important topics concerning the Church. Doors will open at 9:30 am with coffee and water available. Program will begin at 10:00 with Morning prayer. The Bishop will speak for ½ hour followed by question and answer time and adjourn by 11:30.

Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson has called each of us to 50 days of prayer leading up to the churchwide Assembly which begins Aug. 17. This church is invited to pray for wisdom in discernment for the ELCA and voting members of the 2009 Churchwide Assembly. Prayers, scripture readings and hymns are posted at http://www.ELCA.org/50days .

Congregational News
First Lutheran Church Prophetstown invites you to a Peder Eide Concert at Eclipse Square on highway 78 in Prophetstown, September 26 from 6-8 pm. Food will be served in the park beginning at 4 pm. Local groups will perform from about 4:30-6 pm. There will be a free will offering. Rain location is the school gym.

Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center and Lutheran Social Services of Illinois invite you to find out more about SALT - Service and Leadership Training. It's a calling from God to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ. The objectives of S.A.L.T. are to Increase self-esteem in the students; Encourage friendship skills; and Raise awareness about LSSI's social ministry programs through Exposure to leadership skills, Problem Solving, Decision-making and Independence. SALT will run August 9-14.
