Congregations are invited to apply for outreach project grants made available through the NIS Outreach Committee. Grants will be awarded for up to $1,000 and are intended to help congregations reach out to their communities through evangelism and invitation. The grants are for 2010. Applications must be returned by November 15. Contact Pr. Nordby for more information.
The NIS Global Mission Committee invites all current and prospective companion congregations in the Northern Illinois Synod to One in Mission: Companion Parish Program Event, Saturday, October 24, 2009, 9 am-1 pm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1915 N. First St. DeKalb. With more than 30 active parish-to-parish relationships relating to companions in Tanzania and India we have just begun to open the doors of this mission opportunity. This event is designed to strengthen current relationships and encourage new relationships. ELCA Global Mission Unit special guests will be the Reverend Gary Hansen, Associate for Global Mission Partnerships, and the Reverend Joseph Chu, Director for Mission Interpretation and Support (Asia Pacific). Cost is $8 per person. Please register by October 21 to Pr. Gary Erickson, 815-758-3203.
Plan to attend one of this year's NI Synod Misison Gatherings which are being held in each conference. This year's NIS Mission Gatherings focus on The Book of Faith. Christian educators, Sunday School teachers, Council members, and other congregational leaders and members are encouraged to attend these informative presentations. Registration begins at 6:30 pm with program beginning at 7:00 (except for 11/15)

Ready or not! The Professional Leaders Conference at Bishop Lane Retreat Center in Rockford will be Sept. 28-30. Presenters will be Richard H. Bliese and David Cherwein. Remember, Genesis Bookstore will be on site, but will be unable to take credit cards - please bring cash or checks. "ASK, THANK, TELL" Stewardship Ministry Workshop. Congregational stewardship leaders are invited to Faith, Rochelle on Thurs., Oct. 29 for an exciting resource opportunity for stewardship ministry in the congregation. Pastor Charles Lane, Director of the ELCA Stewardship Key Leader Program will conduct a workshop on basic principles of congregational stewardship from 10 am-2 pm. Cost is $12 for lunch. Several of the voting members to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly have offered to speak with groups of people about the assembly. Contact Julie Lewis in the Synod Office to arrange a visit.
The Northern Illinois Synod Candidacy committee is offering a retreat to aid in discerning a call to rostered ministry in the ELCA from 10-2pm on Saturday October 24 at Faith, Rochelle. Registration deadline is Friday October 2. Contact Judi Fields at the Synod Office as soon as possible.

Hunger and related illnesses kill 25,000 people a day, more than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Not only does hunger kill more people, it also is a cause or catalyst for many disease processes.

 First, Prophetstown is sponsoring Peder Eide and his whole band in Concert on September 26 in Eclipse Square Park (on Route 78) in Prophetstown. Come see Peder and his whole band for free and partake in a good time with youth, families, etc. Peder's concert will be from 6-8 with food being served in the park from 4 pm on. Local groups will perform from about 4:30-6. There will be a free will offering. In case of rain, we will meet in the school gym (Also on Route 78 in Prophetstown).
 All are invited to hear the exciting sounds of New Life Band, a six-member musical team from Tanzania, East Africa. They will perform Thursday, October 8, from 7 - 9 pm at Katie's Cup coffeebar, located at 502 Seventh Street, Rockford and Sunday, October 11, 6:30 pm, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 3300 Rural Street, Rockford. All concerts are free; donations are welcomed. New Life Band is a multi-talented group of musicians who reach their audiences through a wide range of music, from traditional African drum rhythms and close harmonies, to modern western style instruments with an African flare.
