Clergy sabbatical grants

(from the February 2009 the Lutheran magazine)

Twenty-one ELCA congregations and 23 pastors received grants from the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment. The ELCA recipients were among 133 congregations and 138 pastors in 36 states to receive funds. Lilly's National Clergy Renewal Program provided grants in 2008 ranging from $18,758 to $45,000 to help congregations cover costs associated with their pastors' sabbaticals. Lilly applications say: "Each congregation may apply for an award of up to $50,000, and up to $15,000 of that amount may be spent for congregational support during the absence of the pastor." Information from Wheat Ridge

(from walking together 2/24/08)

Wheat Ridge Ministries recently approved 14 grants totaling $73,844 to support sabbatical experiences for professional church workers. Wheat Ridge believes that sabbatical leave for rest and renewal is a significant way that congregations can support and encourage the health and wellness of church leaders. "For those congregations that have not yet developed a sabbatical policy, I would encourage them to visit Wheat Ridge Ministries' Sabbatical Resource Center at www.wheatridge.org/sabbaticals ," Becker said. "This site provides a complete guide to assist congregations in developing their policy -sample policies to helpful resources to "best practices" from congregations that have already developed their policy. Wheat Ridge is also pleased to provide complimentary personal counsel from a seasoned professional as congregations are developing their proposals."
