Wholeness Wheel - Emotional Well-Being

“I like myself!”

What would you think of a person who openly declares, “I like myself!”?   Would you say the person is narcissistic?  Would the person be too proud?  Maybe we could put it another way.  What would it mean to be your own best friend?  Then there is a new frame of reference.  When we say, “I like this person.”  it sounds  loving.

Wellness is a wholistic experience.  You and I are powerfully made in the image of God.  When the Creator finished crafting human kind as the top of his creation, he said “It is good.”  After baptism God said, “You are my beloved, in whom I am well pleased.   Furthermore Jesus said that our body is a sacred temple.

BODY:   How is your temple doing in body, mind and spirit?  Doctors have found that resting your body by taking a nap in the afternoon for 20 minutes can be renewing and refreshing.  Backrubs can be relaxing and spiritual.  Twenty to forty minutes of vigorous exercise three times a week can gift you with an endorphin high as well as add years to your life.

MIND:   The mind is a beautiful and awesome part of the temple.  A therapy for Alzheimer’s or forgetfulness can be as simple thing as reading, doing crossword puzzles and playing with math problems.  Sometimes stress and over scheduling can be the cause an crowded mind to forget.  “The mind is a terrible thing to waste.” is a theme of The Negro College Fund.”   Stimulate your brain with good things.   It is like a muscle powering your intellect.

SPIRIT:   The Spirit is the driving force of the temple’s body and mind.  Even spiritual leaders can benefit from retreats, spiritual guidance and daily meditation.  One might say, “Where is the time to meditate?  I am so busy.”  First of all, we can’t afford not to maintain a strong spiritual base.  Secondly, we can “Live in the Shadow of the Almighty.”  This means that life is in a continuum.  God has no wristwatch.  Pray while waiting in the doctor’s office;  write letters to God in your journal;  talk about God with others; be a living prayer, count your blessings and be open to the surprises by the Holy Spirit.  Serving others, in Jesus’ name can offer gifts of perspective and fulfillment.

Set yourself down.  Look over and see you as your own best friend.  You deserve love and support.  Be kind and gentle with you.  Forgive yourself.  Treat your temple right.  What a Friend we have in Jesus.  All our sins and grief’s to bear.  You are worth it.  You are loved.   Can you say?  “I like myself!”
